Don't Diet - just don't do it!

Diets don't work because if the culture of dieting was going to work anywhere, it would have to be America where perfect conditions for dieting are most prevalent. It has all the conditions that breed a plethora of diets:

• it's full of too thin models and glamour magazines

• body dissatisfaction is rife

• it’s where most diets originate

• it has the higher percentage of people on diet at any one time

and yet....overall, are Americans getting thinner or um… fatter?

Well when you look at our psychology and biology it isn't difficult to see why diet's don't work ... except... Well let me put it this way, there's one area where they do work spectacularly well.

Diets DO work - if you want to get fatter

In the famous Keys research project done in 1960, in which army objectors choose food restriction over going to the army, they lost up to 25% of their body weight.

But... within five months of food becoming freely available once more, all the men had regained their lost weight and on average had overshot their original weight by 10%.

Dr Bob Schwartz (author of ‘Diets don’t work’) claimed to run one of the most successful weight-gain programs based on exactly the same principles people have been using in order to lose weight. Underweight people were put on a diet, then taken off it and allowed to eat normally. “Within a few days they have gained all the weight back, plus some…we put them back on diet for another three days…we keep doing this… until they are the weight they want to be.”

Diets have a spectacular FAILURE rate

Throw failing diets out

Like I said: brocolli + gym + weight loss products does not always = thin.

Why don't diets work? Well it's simple really. If your goal was to get to the moon and you chose a hang-glider as your vehicle, imagine how frustrated and hopeless you'd feel after multiple attempts.

You could try as hard as you like, tweak every part of it, exercise all the willpower and self-control in the world and all you would land up with is frustration and feelings of failure when your attempts repeatedly failed.

A tape measure cannot remove a screw. A sink cannot make toast. A hole can't hold water. And in the same vein, diets don't work because they are simply the wrong vehicle.

Why diets don't work:

• for biological and metabolic reasons that are well documented
(click here see the diet myths about lose weight quick plans)

• for psychological reasons; (click here to see the diet myths about the value of focussing on your body) (click here to see the diet myth about diet motivation)

Dont diet reasons

• because they don’t tackle the reasons people overeat in the first place, and

• because they are unnatural and are unsustainable from the get-go.

Come on, how much more evidence do you need? I dare you to join me give up fighting the weight war: ditch diets and live lite. And by the way did you know that diets don't work for your pets either - read this fascinating article by Pam Whyte - an expert behavioral expert.
