Be RICH this Christmas
1993 was a tough year for us, we weren't exactly feeling flush. I was so stressed about buying gifts that my body worry temporarily left me.
Necessity became the mother of invention. I wrote a letter to the who family basically saying that we'd sent our requested list of pressies into the man in the big red coat who comes down chimneys, along with our cheque. He'd come back to us to let us know that our cheque had bounced but that his elves and reindeer wanted to help so they'd agreed they would happily package up one envelope from each family member to each other family to be delivered. In this envelope could be any number of things:
* a gift voucher (or a little booklet of them if the giver wanted) offering to do anything that didn't cost money e.g. 2 hours of baby-sitting, promising to cook a meal, wash windows, wash a car, a foot massage or pedacure etc...
* a letter telling the recipient what made them special and why we loved having them in our lives.
* letter reminding them of one of our favourite memories of them
We were greeted by a very different looking Christmas tree that year....only a smattering of wrapped presents. It felt a little subdued. But I have to tell you it was probably our most memorable Christmas-ever. There were lots of red eyes and an empty box of tissues by the time we'd all finished.
I wrote each child a tiny book that I illustrated with themselves as the hero/heroine. For each adult it was a little cloth scroll on which I decopaged with family pictures telling them why I loved them. People hugged them to themselves as if they'd just received diamonds.
Many of the expensive gifts I've given - sit gathering dust above cupboards. Yet, 15 years later these simple scrolls still hang next to bedsides, having survived many moves.
My sister had bribed the reindeer to carry something a bit bigger. She'd collected old bricks from a driveway she was replacing and decorated one for each of 'the bricks' in her life along with a beautiful poem about our specialness.
My favourite gift though was from my 99-year old grandfather. It had 4 little words next to a fishing hook: "Remember that magic moment." I knew exactly what he meant. Probably 25 years earlier he'd helped me skip a class I hated, and we'd sat like conspirators munching doorstopper peanut butter sandwiches he'd made while we fished.
We might not have had money that Christmas - but I felt like I'd won the lotto As me what everyone game me for Christamas of 1992, 1995, 2001 or any one other year and there's no ways I could tell you. Ask me what I got for 1993, and I'll never forget. So for those of you who are feeling the pinch, there are so many ways of being rich.
