Causes of Childhood Obesity - childhood obesity causesEvery day thousands of parents type 'causes of childhood obesity,''childhood obesity causes' or 'childhood obesity prevention' into search engines. It's an indication of the desperation parents feel around children and eating and their eagerness to find childhood obesity solutions that work. Some worry about the psychological effects of obesity on their child, others are worried about obesity and health. But with childhood obesity rates soaring, there are more and more questions being asked about childhood obesity causes. In the many workshops I did for womens magazines, the question and answer sections was often about their childrens' weight. Researching the Causes of Childhood ObesityIn order to write this book (called 'Mom, Pass the Broccoli' in South African where it was first published), I delved into thousands of research articles on childhood obesity, I read countless books on the subject, I spent hours with parents and had focus groups with children. And then I experimented with the childhood obesity prevention ideas I discovered to find which ones worked. What I discovered surprised me - I think it'll surprise you as well. What I discovered about the causes of childhood obesity was that everything in our Western culture is pretty much designed to product fat children (and fat adults too): Sedentary lifestyles: Western lifestyles are designed to be sedentary. Children spend way too much time in front of TV, computer or playing video games and too little time running around outside. Even our schools are designed to take active running around kids and condition them to sit quietly behind a desk or risk getting into troubled or being labelled as 'hyperactive.' Bad food : Fast food joints are increasingly found on evert corner. They are notorius for their over-abundance of bad fats, salt and sugar which is tasty but lethal for weight. Food advertising/ Advertisers have a specially targeted way of specifically targeting children so as to develop their 'pester power' by creating colorful cartoon advertising for unhealthy products. You will be simply stunned at how the food industry continues to market to our children and cons us (and them) into thinking that diet foods are healthy and safe to eat in large quantities. The food myths sold to us and our children are pretty scary Body image: Advertising also impacts enormously on how children perceive their bodies ought to be and at what ages your children will start to diet. Diets are lethal for health and if you think they reduce childhood obesity, think again. Diets work best to help you GAIN weight! More latchkey children - as more parents work in order to give their children 'the best', children come home to empty homes, they often snack on empty but high calorie treats left by parents leaving them food treats as a kind of 'love to go' to make up for their absence."These are only some of the causes of childhood obesity that I discuss in my book, along with a host of practical, sane, sensible and fun childhood obesity solutions.
